The Washington International Competition for Piano took place on May 27 and 28, 2011. Semi-finals were on May 27 at the George Washington University, Benjamin T. Rome Hall, Washington, DC. Finals were on May 28 at 2 pm in the Terrace Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC.

The first-prize winner will have a solo performance with the FMMC Avanti Orchestra in the Terrace Theatre of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at 7:30 pm; a recital at the Phillips collection on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 4:00 pm; and a recital at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at 7:30 pm.

Eligibility

Applicants must not be under professional management. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of the competition. Proof of age will be required. Previous first-prize winners of this competition may not apply.

Required Repertoire

Repertoire should include 80 minutes of music representing various periods and styles of solo piano music.

Regulations and Instructions

  1. Once an application is submitted, no changes in repertoire are permitted.
  2. The preliminary jury will review the CDs to select the semifinalists. All applicants will be notified after the CD review by the beginning of April.
  3. Semifinalists selected after the CD auditions will compete in Washington, DC.
  4. Applicants should be prepared to play all repertoire upon request for the semifinal round.
